Historic half-timbered houses line the Ilmenau River in Lüneburg, Germany. Because the historic center survived World War II largely intact, the town is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. It is also known as the salt capital of Germany, due to the local mining and production of salt for hundreds of years.
