The term hawk is loosely used to describe all birds of prey besides owls. Even carrions, birds who eat dead animals rather than hunt their own, are included in the hawk category. These birds are distinguished by their acute vision. Their eyesight is several times stronger than that of humans, and this ability allows them to see their prey as they soar hundreds of feet above the ground. Most of these birds will soar in circles as they ride air currents to save energy.
