Built in the 12th century and nestled above the Rio Tina valley near Latzfons, Italy, Castello di Gernstein shines in evening light amid the South Tyrolean Alps. The original castle fell into disrepair but was purchased and renovated by Prussian Lieutenant General Friedrich von Gerstein-Hohenstein in 1880. Even though the man and the castle shared a last name, there is no known historical connection between the two.
