Downy Woodpecker Jigsaw Puzzle

Downy Woodpecker Jigsaw Puzzle

The woodpecker in this jigsaw puzzle is a Downy woodpecker. This small colorful cousin to other woodpeckers is only 15 to 17 cm long but is full of energy. When this handy insect eating bird is after insects or larva on a tree, the Downy woodpecker beak makes a drumming sound as it strikes the tree looking for food. The rigid pointed tail feathers allow this bird to brace itself against a tree trunk as it arches backwards and brings the beak rapidly forward.

The Downy woodpecker can be found in North and Central America where it feeds on insects, seeds and berries. Nesting in cavities of dead trees or branches, this species produces 3 to 6 eggs that hatch in less than two weeks.
